Before

Sheila had been in serious pain for months following a fall down the stairs. She walked bent double. She’d had four spinal surgeries over the years and the pain felt like more of the same – her hip, she said. That’s where it hurt. That’s where it had always made sense to look.

She’d tried what was available. She’d been assessed, treated, managed. Nothing had shifted. The pain was constant enough that she’d canceled a trip to Australia – a holiday she’d been planning, a journey that mattered to her – because she simply couldn’t face it in the state she was in.

By the time she came to us she wasn’t looking for a miracle. She was looking for something that might help, even a little.

The First Session

We didn’t start with her hip. We never start where the pain is – we start with the whole system, looking for what’s actually driving it.

Within the first few minutes of assessment, we found it. Not her hip. Not her back. A bump to her head from the fall – something that had happened at the same time as everything else, something nobody had thought to connect to the pain she’d been experiencing ever since.

Her nervous system had been in a state of protection. Bracing. Guarding. Doing what nervous systems do when they believe there’s still a threat present. The hip pain was real – but it wasn’t the source. It was the output.

When we addressed the head injury, something shifted almost immediately. Sheila hadn’t tried to change position. Nothing was forced or manipulated. Her body simply let go of what it had been holding.

She shuffled slightly in her seat. Sat upright. Looked up.

“Sam, I feel better.”

After

One session. That’s all it took to find the thing that had been missed, and to begin the process of correcting it.

Sheila left that day standing differently to how she’d walked in. The pain that had been constant for months had significantly reduced. The nervous system, once it understood the threat had been addressed, no longer needed to protect at the same level.

She didn’t need years of management. She needed someone to ask the right questions and look at the whole picture rather than the site of the pain.

What This Means For You

Sheila’s story isn’t unusual in one specific way – the cause of her pain had nothing to do with where the pain was. That’s more common than most people realise, and it’s why so many people spend years being treated for the wrong thing.

If you’ve had a fall, an accident, an operation, or any kind of physical event – and pain followed that you can’t fully explain – there’s a strong chance something

was missed. Not because the people treating you weren’t skilled. But because most treatment systems aren’t designed to look at the whole picture.

The diagnostic first session is where we look at everything. Not just where it hurts. What happened, when, and what your nervous system has been doing about it ever since.
