What Happens in Your First Session.

Most people who arrive here have already tried physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic or rehabilitation and still do not have a clear explanation.

During your first session, we take a comprehensive history and assess the nervous system and relevant movement patterns to identify factors that may be contributing to the problem.

We explain what we find in plain English. Where time allows, we begin treatment and immediately retest relevant movements or symptoms. You leave with a clearer understanding of the findings and the possible route forward.

Why This Works When Other Treatments Have Not

Traditional physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy and rehabilitation often focus on the painful area, local tissues, joints, strength or mobility. Those approaches can be valuable, but some people continue to struggle when the wider factors influencing their symptoms have not yet been identified.

Functional neurology takes a brain-based first approach. Your nervous system receives information from the body, interprets it and helps organise movement, balance, muscle tone and protective responses. Previous injury, persistent pain, sensory changes, workload and other challenges can influence how that system is functioning.

During your Diagnostic First Session, we assess relevant neurological and movement patterns, apply appropriate inputs and immediately retest. A change in the room can help identify a useful direction for treatment; it is not a guarantee of any particular outcome.

The advantage of this approach is that recommendations are based on your individual findings rather than on the symptom label alone. It can provide a different option for people whose symptoms have persisted despite more traditional care.

Is This Right for You

If this sounds like you, a Diagnostic First Session will give you clarity. In 18 years we have rarely found a situation where the right question wasn’t also the missing one.

TESTIMONIALS - EXPERIENCES

What Clients Have Experienced

Katelin, 15, came to us 6 months after a routine appendectomy. Constant pain in her lower abdomen, back, groin and legs. MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, blood tests – all clear. She was on six medications including codeine. Her school attendance had collapsed and she’d stopped training for the junior world cup football squad she’d worked years to make. Her mum emailed us after trying everything else. In the first session we found an infected surgical scar nobody had identified. Three sessions later her pain had reduced significantly and she was back training.

– Katelin, Newcastle

Sheila had been bent double when she walked in. Four spinal surgeries behind her, months of worsening pain since a fall down the stairs. She kept pointing to her hip – that’s where it hurt, that’s where it made sense. Towards the end of the session, she hadn’t tried to move. Nothing was forced. She shuffled slightly, sat upright, looked up and said “Sam, I feel better.” The cause wasn’t her hip. It was a bump to her head from the fall that nobody had ever connected to anything.

– Sheila, North Tyneside

Jill came to us at 77, bent double, unable to walk more than a few steps. She’d seen a physiotherapist, an osteopath, an acupuncturist, and a spinal consultant. Surgery had been ruled out. Her GP had run out of options. Within her first session she felt hope for the first time in years. Three years on, she is 79, pain-free, back riding horses and playing squash twice a week with her brother. She now lifts a 32kg kettlebell for reps – a weight most men find challenging.

From Doubled Over In Pain To Strong And Capable

During Sheila's first diagnostic session, we assessed ten specific areas, and treated what needed help. Towards the end, she sat up. Something had visibly changed. She told me the pain had massively subsided - and I could see her trying to make sense of what had just happened. That moment told me everything. Then there's Jill:

Jill is 79. She came to us bent double, unable to walk more than a few steps. She now lifts a 32kg kettlebell for reps. This is what happens when you find what's actually been missed.

What Happens After

After the session, you will receive a written report within 24 hours and an included 30–40 minute Zoom findings call. We use that call to explain the findings, answer your questions and discuss the most appropriate options.

Further sessions are recommended only when they make sense for your goals and findings. Some people may benefit from a short course of individual sessions; more complex or longer-standing problems may be better suited to a structured programme. There is no obligation or pressure to continue.

After a Diagnostic full treatment session you may be given brain based exercises to do that help your body and brain work well so that your results last.

These are usually only needed to be completed in the first week of treatment. Some people may require more time. Whatever you need, it will be bespoke to you and what your body and nervous system require to move well.
