Targeted Hip Pain Relief for Cramlington Residents

Cramlington is a growing town with a focus on active living, from the walking paths around Northumberlandia to the bustling Manor Walks centre. However, for residents dealing with persistent hip pain, this activity can feel like a distant memory.

Hip pain is not just a simple ache. It can be a sharp pinch in the groin, a burning sensation on the outside of the thigh (often misdiagnosed as bursitis), or a deep ache in the buttock. It can make the drive to work agony, turn a simple shopping trip into an endurance test, and make sleeping on your side impossible.

At Breakthrough Pain & Performance, we provide specialist care for Cramlington residents. We are just a short drive away, and we offer a unique neurological perspective on pain that helps those who feel they have “tried everything” without success.

The "Lateral Sling" Failure: Why Your Hip Hurts When You Walk

One of the most common issues we see in our Cramlington clients is pain on the outside of the hip, often diagnosed as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) or bursitis.

This condition is often a result of the Lateral Sling not firing correctly. The lateral sling is a chain of muscles-including the gluteus medius, tensor fasciae latae, and the opposite quadratus lumborum (lower back)-that keeps your pelvis level when you stand on one leg.

Every time you take a step, you are standing on one leg. If your brain doesn’t coordinate this sling properly, your hip “drops” out to the side with every single step. This is often visible as a slight waddle or a hip hitch.

This dropping motion causes the thick band of tissue on the outside of the thigh (the IT band) to compress the tendons against the hip bone. This creates immense friction and inflammation. An injection might reduce the inflammation temporarily, but it doesn’t fix the sling. As soon as you start walking again, the friction returns.

Our treatment focuses on retraining the lateral sling. We use specific neurological drills to teach the brain how to stabilise the pelvis in a single-leg stance. By fixing the wobble, we remove the friction, and the pain subsides naturally.

The Impact of Modern Work in Cramlington

Cramlington has a diverse workforce, from healthcare professionals at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital to industrial workers and office staff. Each of these roles brings specific risks to the hip.

We tailor our treatment to your specific lifestyle. We don’t just treat the pain; we give you the tools to survive your work day. This might involve specific activation drills to wake up your glutes before a shift, or mobility drills to open up the hips after a long drive.

Why "Just Stretching" Can Make Impingement Worse

A common mistake we see is people trying to “stretch away” hip pain. You feel a pinch at the front of the hip (Femoroacetabular Impingement or FAI), so you try to stretch your hip flexors or force yourself into deep squats.

However, in impingement cases, stretching often makes things worse. The pinch occurs because the ball of the hip (femur) is sliding forward in the socket and hitting the front rim. This happens because the posterior muscles (glutes) are not firing reflexively to pull the ball back into the centre of the socket.

If you aggressively stretch the front of the hip, you may be removing the only stability the brain has managed to create. The brain often responds by tightening the muscles up even more or increasing the pain signal.

We focus on neurological centration. We use specific activation drills to wake up the deep stabilising muscles that hold the ball in the centre of the socket. Once the joint is centred, the pinch disappears, and range of motion returns naturally without the need for painful stretching.
