Killingworth is a town designed for modern living, characterised by its lake, the Killingworth Centre, and its excellent transport links to the rest of North Tyneside. It is home to a busy community of commuters, young families, and professionals who need to stay active and mobile to manage their daily lives.
However, when hip pain strikes, this active lifestyle can come to a grinding halt. Hip pain is deceptive; it often starts as a mild stiffness in the groin or a dull ache on the outside of the thigh that you might ignore for months. But over time, it can evolve into a sharp, catching pain that makes getting in and out of the car an ordeal, disrupts your sleep, and stops you from enjoying walks around the lake.
For many Killingworth residents, the journey to relief has been frustrating. You may have been told you have “tight hips” and given stretches that don’t seem to work. You may have been told it is early arthritis and to “wait and see.” At Breakthrough Pain & Performance, we offer a different path. We specialise in treating the neurological drivers of hip pain. We look beyond the structural diagnosis to understand why your nervous system is creating pain, offering a robust, long-term solution.
Many Killingworth residents spend a significant portion of their week in cars, commuting to Newcastle via the A1056 or navigating the local area for school runs and shopping. Driving is one of the most common triggers for hip pain, but the reasons are neurological as well as mechanical.
When you drive, you are in a fixed, seated position. This places the hip joint in approximately 90 degrees of flexion. In this position, the hip flexor muscles (iliopsoas and rectus femoris) are chronically shortened.
Neurologically, this creates a phenomenon called Reciprocal Inhibition. The brain operates on a system of checks and balances. If the muscles on the front of the hip (flexors) are tight and overactive, the brain reflexively switches off the muscles on the back of the hip (the glutes) to prevent you from fighting against yourself.
When you step out of the car after a long commute, your brain doesn’t instantly reset this program. You stand up, but your glutes are still inhibited. This means you cannot extend your hip fully when you walk. Instead of using your powerful glute muscles to push you forward, your body compensates by arching the lower back or forcing the ball of the hip forward in the socket. This leads to anterior hip pain (impingement) and lower back stiffness.
We help you “commut-proof” your hips. We treat the neurological imbalances caused by driving and give you specific activation drills to perform before and after your journey. These “neural resets” wake up the glutes and relax the flexors instantly, allowing you to walk away from the car without pain.
Why does your hip hurt even though you haven’t injured it? The answer often lies in a “sensory mismatch” within the nervous system.
Your brain relies on three main navigation systems to keep you upright and safe:
1. Vision: Your eyes.
2. Vestibular: Your inner ear (balance).
3. Proprioception: The sensors in your joints and muscles.
Ideally, these three systems agree. However, in modern life, they often conflict. For example, if you are walking around the Killingworth Centre, your eyes are scanning shelves and crowds, but if you have a stiff neck or a previous ankle injury, your proprioception might be sluggish.
When the brain receives conflicting information, it gets confused. A confused brain is a threatened brain. To protect you from falling, it creates a “locking” response in the body’s centre of gravity: the hips. It tightens the deep hip rotators to create rigid stability because it doesn’t trust your sensors to keep you upright dynamically. This tightness compresses the hip joint and wears down the cartilage.
Our assessment identifies which system is giving the wrong information. By correcting a visual error or a balance deficit, we resolve the conflict. The brain feels safe and immediately relaxes the hip muscles, taking pressure off the joint.
We are extremely accessible for Killingworth residents. Our clinic in Shiremoor is just a 5 to 10-minute drive via the A1056 or B1317.
We offer free parking right outside the clinic, which is a huge benefit when you are in pain. You do not need to worry about walking from a distant car park or navigating stairs. Our facility is ground floor and designed for easy access, allowing you to arrive relaxed and ready for treatment. Reducing the stress of arrival helps lower your overall threat level, making your nervous system more receptive to treatment.
We believe in empowering you to understand your pain. We do not just treat you; we teach you.
1. The Investigation: We look at your reflexes, your sensation, and your muscle strength. We also look at your balance and coordination systems to see if they are contributing to your hip instability.
2. The Neurological Reset: We use precise stimuli to improve the input to your brain. This might involve joint adjustments, but it might also involve working on your balance system. A stable body is a pain-free body.
3. Mechanical Relief: We use hands-on techniques to release the muscles that are physically restricting the hip, but we do so gently to avoid triggering a threat response.
4. Movement Re-education: We teach you how to move safely. We show you how to hinge at the hips, how to squat without pinching, and how to maintain hip health at home using neuro-dynamic drills.
